Satish Shah, folk singer, dancer, choreographer, and teacher from Nairobi, Kenya has had a distinguished career ever since he arrived in London in 1973.

In 1984 Satish choreographed dance sequences for well-known Indian singer, Asha Bhosle for her English Tour. In 1991 he choreographed for the South Wales intercommunity Cultural Arts production of SALOME, which was funded by the Welsh National Opera. Also, in 1991 he made a dance documentary for 'Museum of Moving Image' at the National Film Theatre. He has also choreographed for Asian Magazine BBC program at Pebble Mill in Birmingham.

Satish started dancing with folk dance troupes in Kenya and England from a very young age. In 1976 he started very serious and profound training in Bharat Natyam under the guidance of Sunita Golvala. He has also mastered the basic styles of Khathak and Manipuri dance.

 
 

 
His first amateur Rass/Garba dance troupe which he presented at the Royal Albert Hall at the 'Asian Youth Festival of dance and Music' won overall first prize for the best item. Invitations have since flooded in for Satish to choreograph items for various Indian organization, which have always, been successful in winning first prizes for their high standards of polished choreography and colourful costumes which are designed by Satish.

In 1980 he danced the main role of Lord Rama in the dance drama 'RAMAYAN' followed by appearances in 'NARSAYIO' and 'BODANO'.
An aspect of dance creation that interests Satish is the research into different folk styles of India. This work bore fruit in 1982 when he choreographed 18 folk dances of Gujarat and Rajastan for the Ismali Community. After three months of training, 62 amateurs led to a successful presentation in the open air at White City Stadium.

In 1984 Satish Shah founded SARASWATI ACADEMY OF INDIAN DANCE in London. It endeavours to support and encourage young dancers to get involved and develop their skills in Indian folk, film and semi-classical dance. Their creative repertoire is subsequently full of new and innovative dance items in folk, film and semi-classical styles. Presented in their very colourful and vibrant costumes, their fast-moving and refreshing performances have won them first prizes in competitions throughout the UK.

Their talents are given many opportunities for display at festivals, community shows and private functions where they are in much demand.




Satish continues at S.A.I.D. with new, exceptional and distinctive work all the time. The most recent choreographic work was at South Bank in 'COMING OF AGE' organized by Academy of South Asian Dance, directed and designed by Keith Khan.

In the year 2001, as a singer Satish has produced a very elegant and tasteful album of Bhajans and does live vocal performance to karaoke music with a trained choir of sixteen housewives.
